(Biochemical Division) has developed numerous bacterial cultures which are used in a wide range of remedial applications including soil and groundwater decontamination, ex situ as well as in situ. Our microorganisms, selectively adapted to rapidly biodegrade a waste or contaminant, are cultured, blended and shipped to the target site for incubation. Depending on the application, incubation takes place in either a continuous flow or batch system. Sybron bacteria are dosed according to specific design criteria and site analysis resulting in a dramatic increase in microbial population. As a result, the augmented population is normally two orders of magnitude greater than the indigenous population. Due to the enhanced kinetic rates, selectively adapted cultures break down refractory compounds at accelerated rates. Sybron's complete staff of biologists, microbiologists, engineers and geologists have demonstrated competence in all aspects of the remedial process, starting with assessment, system design and installation and site closure. A typical system will consist of a bioreactor system, vacuum blower and a nutrient and culture delivery system for in situ application. Technology Type: BIOREMEDIATION - NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED (s0B TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS Augmented bioreclamation (ABR) has been successfully applied in situations involving petroleum hydrocarbons, phenols, alcohols, ketones, pentachlorophenol and various phthalate compounds. Because many sites lend themselves to in situ design, minimal site disruption occurs. ABR is a cost-effective technology when compared to alternative technologies such as incineration, fixation and landfilling. Typical savings in using bioremediation range from 50 to 60 percent of the cost of these alternatives. Sybron's system also can be thought of as the ultimate disposal technology in that the specialized microbes biologically degrade the compounds to carbon dioxide and water. The alternative technologies simply transfer the problem and future contingent liabilities are always a concern. Page No. 3 of 43 VISITT 3.0 10/11/99 (s3B Vendor Name: SYBRON CHEMICALS, INC. Technology Type: BIOREMEDIATION - NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED (s0B TECHNOLOGY LIMITATIONS The augmented bioreclamation (ABR) technology is not applicable for metal removal or some highly chlorinated compounds. Ionic forms of certain metals and "other" compounds can be inhibiting and/or toxic to microbial activity. If there is a potential for such compounds to be present, a laboratory treatability study is required. Sybron's laboratory/research center is fully equipped to make such evaluations. Page No. 4 of 43 VISITT 3.0 10/11/99 (s3B Vendor Name: SYBRON CHEMICALS, INC. Technology Type: BIOREMEDIATION - NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED (s0B OTHER COMMENTS ON TECHNOLOGY Sybron's specialized cultures have been successfully used in many field applications involving soil and groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Tests conducted in 1990 by the US EPA on contaminated samples for the Prince William Sound in Alaska utilized Sybron's cultures and proved that Sybron's bacteria were the best when compared to 10 other companies. In just 11 days, 94.5 percent of the alkanes in the test sample were removed. Sybron's augmented bioremediation (ABR) Bi-Chem petroleum blend of cultures are listed on the National Contingency Plan product schedule and may be used to remediate oil releases into navigable waters. The following procedures are then followed: 1. Check sample for pH, moisture, total and selective culture counts, level of contamination, soil condition and characteristics. 2. At least four microcosms are set up in respirometric equipment to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure. A) Poison control - soil and water B) Control "As-is" - soil and water C) Nutrient amendment "soil and water" + nutrients - to determine the effects of stimulation D) Culture amendment - "soil and water" + nutrients + cultures to determine the effects of bioaugmentation 3. Throughout the test program, all control parameters highlighted in the above item no. 1 are checked along with oxygen consumption. 4. Upon completion of the test, a full report along with conclusions and recommendations is issued to the client. Technology Type: BIOREMEDIATION - NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED (s0B FULL SCALE INFORMATION Major unit processes : Typical Equipment List 1. Self contained bioreactor system (system size varies with site conditions) 2. pH control system 3. Solids filtration system 4. Vacuum/blower systems 5. Nutrient and culture delivery systems 6. Distribution system Process -- In Situ The in situ treatment process utilizes both in situ treatment with pump and treat technology. Contaminated groundwater is pumped from one or more extraction wells and delivered to the bioreactor through a filtering system (for the removal of solids). After pH adjustment, cultures, nutrients and oxygen are supplied to the reactor. After the microbial degradation of the targeted substrate is completed, the liquors are re-infiltrated to the contaminated zone. Cultures and nutrients are also delivered to the soil and ground water to degrade contaminants in situ. Vacuum/blower systems are installed in situ to aid in the oxygenation of the contaminated zone. The cycle is then repeated. The combination of extracting contaminated ground water and treating above ground along with injecting cultures and nutrients for in situ treatment significantly decreases treatment time. Process -- Ex Situ Depending on site conditions, either landfarming or vacuum heap designs are chosen. Virtually any type of soil can be conditioned and be completely remediated using this technology. Page No. 43 of 43 VISITT 3.0 10/11/99 (s3B Vendor Name: SYBRON CHEMICALS, INC.
